Why businesses on Wagepoint outsource

Wagepoint is popular with Canadian small businesses because it remits source deductions and files year-end slips on your behalf. What it cannot do is decide where those amounts belong in your books. The journal posts gross wages, CPP, EI and income tax to whatever accounts were chosen at setup, and Wagepoint's fee and the net pay debit arrive on the bank feed separately.

A dedicated accountant closes the loop. We prepare the run, review it with you, post or check the journal, match each Wagepoint debit to the bank, and reconcile the payroll liabilities to the CRA remittance schedule. Provincial items like Ontario EHT and WSIB or WCB premiums are tracked in the same process, so year-end is a review rather than a rebuild.

What we do inside Wagepoint

Pay run preparation

We enter hours, salary changes, vacation pay and bonuses in Wagepoint and send you the pay run summary to approve before the direct deposit deadline.

Journal posting to your ledger

Wagepoint's QuickBooks Online and Xero integrations post the payroll journal. We map earnings, deductions and employer contributions to the right accounts and check each posting.

CRA and Revenu Québec remittance matching

Source deductions Wagepoint remits are matched to the liability accounts so CPP, EI and income tax clear on time and nothing is remitted twice.

Record of Employment support

When an employee leaves or goes on leave, we confirm the ROE data in Wagepoint before it is submitted through ROE Web.

T4, T4A and RL-1 tie-out

Year-end slips generated by Wagepoint are reconciled to the wages and deduction accounts before they are filed.

Provincial payroll items

Employer Health Tax, WSIB, WCB and other provincial premiums are accrued and reconciled alongside the federal remittances.

Integrations we reconcile

  • QuickBooks OnlinePayroll journals, liability accounts and Wagepoint bank debits matched.
  • XeroJournal posting and remittance reconciliation for Xero users.
  • People by WagepointTime off and employee records checked against the pay run.
  • 7shiftsApproved restaurant schedules and hours imported to payroll and verified.
  • PlootoNon-payroll payments to contractors kept separate for T4A reporting.

Migration to and from Wagepoint

Moving to Wagepoint

Switching to Wagepoint mid-year means year-to-date earnings, CPP, EI and income tax must be loaded per employee so T4s are complete. We collect final registers and remittance history from the old provider, enter opening balances in Wagepoint, confirm which remittance periods the old provider still covers, and run the first cycle in parallel before the old service ends.

Moving from Wagepoint

Leaving Wagepoint for QuickBooks Payroll or ADP Canada follows the same checklist in reverse. We export Wagepoint's payroll register, remittance and deduction reports, agree the final pay run Wagepoint will process, hand year-to-date balances to the new provider, and reconcile the last remittances so payroll liabilities close at zero on the switch date.

Accounting software setup and migration

Common Wagepoint reconciliation problems we fix

  1. Payroll register, journal and bank do not agree

Net pay, Wagepoint's fee and the CRA remittance leave the bank at different times. We match each debit to the register so the payroll clearing account nets to zero.

  2. Employer CPP and EI expensed twice

Employer contributions posted from the journal and again from the bank feed inflate payroll expense. We post the accrual once and clear it against the remittance.

  3. Vacation pay accrual not tracked

Accrued vacation is a liability that grows quietly. We reconcile Wagepoint's vacation balances to the ledger every quarter.

  4. ROEs filed with wrong insurable hours

Errors on a Record of Employment delay an employee's EI claim. We check insurable earnings and hours before submission.

  5. Quebec payroll set up like the rest of Canada

QPP, QPIP and Revenu Québec remittances need their own accounts. We configure the chart of accounts for employees in Quebec.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work inside my existing Wagepoint account?

Yes. You add us as a user in your own Wagepoint account with the permissions you choose, and you keep approval of every pay run. We prepare, you approve, and Wagepoint pays employees, remits deductions and files T4s. Your subscription and bank connection stay with you.

How much does Wagepoint bookkeeping support cost?

Pricing depends on volume and scope, so we send a custom quote within 1 business day. Employee count, pay frequency, the number of provinces, and whether monthly bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online or Xero is bundled with payroll are the main factors.

Who remits to the CRA and files the T4s?

Wagepoint remits source deductions and files T4s, T4As and RL-1s under your account. We run payroll under your authority, post the journals and reconcile the filings to the ledger. Any tax return work is preparation support for your CPA; only registered EFILE transmitters file.

Can you prepare Records of Employment?

We prepare the ROE data in Wagepoint when an employee leaves, goes on leave or changes status, and check insurable earnings and hours before it is submitted through ROE Web. Our year-end slips service covers the related T4 and T4A work.

What if our payroll accounts are months behind?

We treat it as a cleanup project. We rebuild the payroll liabilities from Wagepoint reports, CRA statements and the bank, post correcting entries in your ledger, and hand a reconciled balance to the monthly service. The payroll reconciliation service describes the steps.

Do you handle Ontario EHT and workers' compensation premiums?

Yes. We accrue Employer Health Tax, WSIB, WCB and similar provincial premiums each pay run, reconcile them to the statements, and track the payment deadlines so nothing is missed at year-end.
