What is different in Canada

Canadian sellers using Stripe, Shopify or a marketplace often get paid in US dollars even though their sales are made and taxed in Canadian dollars, so payouts need converting before they match the sales report. Since GST/HST rules for digital platforms changed in 2021, some marketplaces now collect and remit tax on behalf of Canadian sellers directly, so that pass-through tax has to be separated from tax the seller still owes. Plooto settlements for invoices paid by pre-authorized debit are reconciled the same way as a card processor payout, matching the batch to the individual invoices it settles. Fees, refunds and chargebacks are posted in Canadian dollars at the exchange rate the processor applied. Our accountants reconcile inside QuickBooks Online or Xero and flag anything that does not tie out in a weekly exception log.

CA rules that shape the work

US-dollar payouts need converting

Many Canadian sellers on Stripe or Shopify are paid in US dollars even though sales are taxed in Canadian dollars, so payouts are converted and the exchange difference posted before the deposit matches.

Marketplace-collected tax versus seller-owed tax

Since 2021, some marketplaces collect and remit GST, HST or QST for Canadian sellers directly. That pass-through amount is separated from tax the seller still owes and reports itself.

Plooto settlements reconciled like a payout

Invoices collected through Plooto pre-authorized debit settle in a batch, similar to a card processor payout, and are matched to the individual invoices they cover.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Stripe reconciliation services cost in Canada?

Pricing depends on volume and scope, so we send a custom quote within 1 business day. As a market reference, Canadian outsourced bookkeeping for online sellers runs C$300 to C$2,000 a month, with most small and medium businesses paying C$400 to C$800 (Outsource Bookkeeping CA, TheAccTaxCo, 2026). Channel count and payout frequency move the quote.

Do you file our GST/HST return or T2?

No. We separate marketplace-collected tax from tax the seller owes and reconcile every payout, but we do not file the GST/HST or T2 return. Your CPA or a CRA-registered EFILE transmitter files it using our reconciled numbers.

Do you cover Canadian hours?

Yes. Your reconciliation accountant works 8am to 8pm ET, covering every Canadian time zone, so a mismatched payout is investigated during your own business day rather than overnight.

Why does our Stripe or Shopify payout not match our sales in Canadian dollars?

Usually because the payout arrived in US dollars and needs converting, or because a marketplace collected GST, HST or QST on your behalf and remitted it directly. We break the payout into its parts so both are visible instead of one confusing deposit.

Do you reconcile Plooto payments as well as card processors?

Yes. Plooto pre-authorized debit collections settle in a batch much like a Stripe or Shopify payout, and we match that batch to the invoices it pays, alongside your card and marketplace channels.
