# What is p11d?

Glossary

A P11D is the UK form an employer files with HMRC reporting the value of benefits in kind and certain expenses provided to an employee or director, such as a company car or private medical insurance, that are not put through payroll. It is due by 6 July following the tax year.

Updated September 2026

## How p11d works

Employers track taxable benefits throughout the year, such as company cars, health insurance and interest-free loans above the reporting threshold, since these count as part of an employee's taxable income even though they are not paid in cash through payroll. Each benefit type has its own valuation rules set by HMRC.

The employer also pays Class 1A National Insurance on the total value of benefits reported, separately from the employee's own tax liability on them. Some employers instead payroll certain benefits in real time, which removes the need for a P11D for those specific benefits, but this must be registered with HMRC in advance. Some benefits, such as certain pension contributions or business mileage paid at or below the approved rate, are specifically exempt from P11D reporting, so employers need to check HMRC's list of exempt benefits before assuming everything provided outside payroll must be reported.

## Example

A company provides a director with private medical insurance valued at £1,200 for the tax year. The employer reports this on a P11D by 6 July, the director's tax code is adjusted to collect tax on the £1,200 benefit, and the employer separately pays Class 1A National Insurance on that same value to HMRC. If the same director is also provided a company car, its taxable benefit value is calculated separately using HMRC's car benefit rules and added as a further line on the same P11D.

## P11D in QuickBooks Online vs Xero

Xero and QuickBooks Online payroll add-ons do not typically calculate P11D benefit valuations automatically, since benefit rules vary widely by type, so UK businesses often use HMRC's own PAYE tools or dedicated P11D software alongside their payroll system. Sage Payroll offers a P11D module for businesses that track benefits regularly.
