## What is different in Canada

Month-end close in Canada has extra tie-outs beyond the usual accruals and prepaids. Sales tax liability accounts need to agree to GST, HST, PST or QST by province, and payroll liabilities need to agree to the CRA remittance the business actually made, which depends on its remitter type and due date. Many incorporated businesses run a fiscal year that does not match the calendar year, so a controller has to track cut-off against the company's own year-end rather than 31 December. Ontario and a few other provinces layer an Employer Health Tax accrual on top of payroll costs. Quebec entities sometimes need the close pack summarized in French for local management. Our accountants close inside QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage 50 on a calendar agreed with you.

## CA rules that shape the work

### Sales tax liability tie-out

GST, HST, PST and QST liability accounts are reconciled by province as part of the close, so the amount owed on the balance sheet agrees with what will actually be remitted.

### CRA remitter types

Payroll deduction remittances follow a schedule set by the business's CRA remitter type, from monthly to accelerated. The close ties the liability account to what was actually remitted, not just what was withheld.

### Non-calendar fiscal year-ends

Many Canadian corporations run a fiscal year that does not end 31 December, so the close calendar follows the organization's own year-end for cut-off and reporting.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does month end close outsourcing cost in Canada?

Pricing depends on volume and scope, so we send a custom quote within 1 business day. As a market reference, Canadian outsourced bookkeeping with a monthly close runs C$300 to C$2,000 a month, with most small and medium businesses paying C$400 to C$800 (Outsource Bookkeeping CA, TheAccTaxCo, 2026). Entities, accounts and sales tax jurisdictions move the quote.

### Do you file our GST/HST return or T2?

No. The close ties out the GST, HST, PST or QST liability and the payroll remittance liability so the numbers are accurate, but we do not file the return. Your CPA or a CRA-registered EFILE transmitter files it from our working papers.

### Do you cover Canadian hours?

Yes. Your close accountant works 8am to 8pm ET, covering every Canadian time zone, so the close calendar and any open questions are handled during your own business day.

### Can you close on our own fiscal year-end instead of the calendar year?

Yes. Many Canadian corporations run a fiscal year that does not match 31 December. We build the close calendar and cut-off rules around your actual year-end, not a generic calendar month.

### Do you handle Employer Health Tax in the close?

Yes, where it applies. Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador levy an Employer Health Tax on payroll, and we accrue and reconcile it alongside other payroll liabilities as part of the monthly close.
